Akron has had a chaotic start to the season under fifth-year head coach Joe Moorhead. Presumed starting quarterback Reese Poffenbarger has not played this season due to ongoing eligibility questions, and a social media promotion led to a random contest winner helping to call plays in Week 2 against Robert Morris.

Ultimately, Akron is probably in its best position as a program since it last went to a bowl game in 2017. Second-year quarterback Cibastian Broughton has looked solid to start the season with an 83.0 completion percentage, 491 total yards and four total touchdowns. The Zips are 1-1 with a 38-16 loss at Wake Forest and a 45-10 win at home over Robert Morris.
