What Barberton’s proposed 1% school income tax would cost at different income levels

BARBERTON, Ohio — A Barberton City School District resident with $60,000 in income subject to the proposed school income tax would pay $600 a year, before any applicable credits, if voters approve the measure on Nov. 3.

At $40,000, the cost would be $400 a year. At $100,000, it would be $1,000. A resident whose income consists entirely of Social Security benefits, pension or other retirement income, interest, dividends or capital gains would have no income subject to the tax under Ohio law.

District officials are seeking the new revenue as Barberton faces annual budget deficits and possible increased state oversight. The Ohio Auditor of State placed the district in fiscal watch May 21, a state designation that brings added financial oversight.
