Akron Mayor, community group, clash over proposed charter amendments

A call by Akron Mayor Shammas Malik for voters to reject two of three charter amendments on the ballot this November is not sitting well with the community group that helped draft them.

In a statement sent out Monday by the mayor’s office, Malik said he believes Issues 11 and 12 which would change rental housing policies on application fees and criminal records would actually “create more problems than they would solve.”

“I do think Issues 11 and 12 attempt to tackle real issues – but do not take into account the potential negative impacts to tenants and landlords alike,” Malik said. “These issues require solutions that consider these impacts and are debated and discussed widely with the public and with our City Council before they are codified in our city’s charter, our constitution.”…
