Eight Akron police officers fired nearly 100 rounds at Jayland Walker in an empty parking lot June 27, 2022, hitting him 46 times.

They continued to shoot him even after he hit the ground. They then placed handcuffs on his bullet riddled body. Like so many other young Black men in America slaughtered by the police, Walker was unarmed and posed no threat.

You may be wondering why this should matter to people in Columbus or Franklin County.

Right now, the prosecutor in the case – Anthony Pierson – is running for Franklin County prosecutor. As someone who has spent their career fighting for racial justice and opportunities for all people, I urge you to reject him.

Our community, like so many others who have experienced police violence — including Columbus — was outraged, and demanded real accountability, including prosecuting the officers involved in Jayland Walker’s shooting. But as we have seen countless times across our country, the prosecutor and grand jury failed to indict the officers, accepting their unbelievable justification for firing almost 100 shots at an unarmed man.
