Deadly tanker crash closes SR-8 in Summit County: PD

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — State Route 8 in Northfield Center Township remains closed Saturday afternoon after a fiery tanker truck crash around 9:30 a.m. that killed the driver of the truck, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said the truck was traveling northbound on State Route 8 and attempted to get on Interstate 271 North.

“The truck lost control and went over the side of the bridge. The truck landed on …State Route 8 and subsequently burst into flames,” deputies said.

“The ramp from State Route 8 to I 271 North is currently closed and State Route 8 is currently closed in both directions. It will remain closed until the bridge can be inspected for safety,” the Summit County Sheriff’s Department said.

The crash is under investigation, they added.

Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the crash site earlier.
