A fresh look at decades-old murders in Shaker Heights

SHAKER HEIGHTS Ohio (WJW) – In 1990, 16-year-old Lisa Pruett made plans to slip out of her parents’ home to meet a friend. She rode her bike to a nearby home.

Shortly after midnight, her body was discovered near the home of her boyfriend, where she had been stabbed 22 times.

The crime left shock waves through the community where police at the time vowed not to rule anyone out.

Another teenager, Kevin Young, the son of a local attorney, was ultimately charged and tried for the crime but found not guilty of all charges.

James Renner, a local crime writer, compiled a mountain of documents, including police and court records.

During the pandemic, with little else to do, Renner says he decided to take a fresh look at the documents to see where they would take him

While there are those in Shaker Heights who, to this day, believe Kevin Young was actually Pruett’s killer, Renner is convinced he is not.

“He really didn’t have any connection to the crime scene or a murder weapon. He had an alibi that night but they went after him,” said Renner.
