Akron’s Own Veronica Sims Takes Office as Representative for Ohio’s 33rd House District

Veronica Sims (D – Akron) has taken office as the representative for Ohio’s 33rd House District, succeeding State Rep. Tavia Galonski. Sims, a lifelong resident of District 33, expressed her gratitude and commitment to her constituents and Ohio. She acknowledged Leader Russo, the House Minority Caucus, and former Rep. Galonski.

Sims graduated from Akron Public Schools and the University of Akron, where she earned a Master of Public Administration and Bachelors in Criminal Justice and Political Science. She has held leadership roles such as Executive Director of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus and Director of Outreach and Community Development for Community Action Akron Summit.

Sims was the first African American female Vice President and President of Summit County Council. She has led initiatives addressing gun violence, infant mortality, police accountability, small business development, and institutional racism. She also works as the Community Outreach Specialist for Stewart and Calhoun Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
