Teens arrested after pursuits, crash in Portage County

Two teens were taken into custody after the Portage County Sheriff’s Office twice pursued a vehicle that had been reported stolen.

The vehicle crashed about 3 p.m. Sunday in Kent when the westbound vehicle struck several other vehicles stopped for a red light on Main Street at Luther Avenue on the north side of Kent State University, the sheriff’s office said in a media release. No serious injuries were reported.

The vehicle then continued through the red light, but disabling damage forced it to stop. Two males and a female then jumped out and a foot pursuit began. The driver ran toward the university and was caught. He was identified as a 17-year-old who had been reported missing from Wooster and had multiple warrants for his arrest and no valid driver’s license.

The male passenger, an 18-year-old Twinsburg resident, was caught behind a nearby business. The unidentified female passenger was not found.

The sheriff’s office said the pursuit began after a deputy checked the vehicle’s registration in Kent and found it had been reported stolen from a Franklin Township business Saturday evening. The deputy attempted a traffic stop in the area of Main and Water streets, but the driver failed to comply.
