Security heightened in Northeast Ohio for Rosh Hashanah

BEACHWOOD, Ohio (WJW) – Overseas attacks have prompted heightened security Wednesday for the start of the Jewish High Holy Day Rosh Hashanah.

On Tuesday, Iran bombarded Israel with more than 100 missiles, and the threat is being felt close to home.

“The safety of our residents is always a top priority,” said Beachwood Police Chief Daniel Grispino. “Especially with the High Holy Days, our officers are conducting saturated patrols in the neighborhoods, just being more visible. It’s about making our residents feel a level of comfort, safety and security.”

Rosh Hashanah is considered one of the holiest days in Judaism.

As such, a large number of congregants are expected at synagogues and temples across Northeast Ohio.

From Cleveland Heights to Akron, local authorities have confirmed that extra safety measures are being taken and could continue indefinitely.

“I would say indefinitely right now,” said Grispino. “We don’t know when the conflict’s going to end and as long as our residents feel that they need a level of increased security, we’re going be there to assist them.”
