The newly redeveloped area includes shaded and moveable seating, gardens, new trees, artwork, two skating areas, and a performance pavilion with three sides including a lawn view for concerts and events of up to 3,500 guests, plus a patio and a canal view that can host smaller events.
“This park represents the collaborative work and passion of so many Akron residents, organizations, and donors to create a true destination spot right in the heart of our downtown corridor,” said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik in a press release from the city.
The redevelopment cost $17 million with the City of Akron funding $6.5 million and the rest coming from donors.
The grand reopening celebration for Lock 3 will be held Nov. 29 immediately following the City’s Welcome Santa Parade. The parade begins downtown at 6:00 p.m. and features floats, marching groups, stilt walkers, costumed characters and more.
