Shelter-in-place order issued in Louisville after building explosion hospitalizes 11 and creates ‘hazardous materials incident’

Nearly a dozen people have been hospitalized following an explosion at an industrial site in Louisville.

The incident, dubbed a “hazardous materials incident” by the public safety office, has left 11 injured, Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg said at a press conference.

“The cause at this point of the explosion is unknown,” Greenberg told reporters. Everyone injured was an employee of the plant. There are no reported fatalities, city officials said.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion coming from a building located at 1901 Payne St. in the Clifton neighborhood.

The building reportedly houses a business that manufactures ingredients for soft drinks. Overhead news video footage showed an industrial building with a large hole in its roof.
