When will it snow in Akron? El Niño winters have caused later first snows in Northeast Ohio

For those of you who hate snow, you can already start counting your blessings and it isn’t even Thanksgiving just yet.

Historically, the first measurable snowfall in Greater Akron is Nov. 9.

And by the time everything is said and done and things thaw out in the spring, some 47 inches of the white stuff falls in Akron and Canton.

Thanks to a string of El NiƱo winters where water temperatures are warmer than usual in the Pacific Ocean, Akron has had a run of late-arriving snow and warmer than typical chilly months.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says another warmer and rainy winter is likely in the Great Lakes.

When does it snow in Akron and Canton?

The National Weather Service snow records for the Akron-Canton region date back to 1948.

The earliest first measurable snow for the region came Oct. 2, 1974, with the latest snowfall on record taking place Christmas Day in 2001.

The latest measurable snow in a winter season came on May 9, 1966, and the earliest last snow ever in Akron-Canton was March 11, 1948.
