MASSILLON ‒ People crowded the streets Saturday night as Massillon kicked off its 69th annual Holiday Parade.
They were bundled for the cold and overcast and windy weather. Spirits were as bright as the decked-out vehicles, holiday walkers handing out candy, the marching band, cheerleaders, dance troupes and scouts and paraded down Eight Street NE and making its way to Towne Plaza.
Jack Laine, 62, a retired social worker from Canal Fulton, came to see the classic cars.
“I’m a classic car buff,” Laine said, “and I just love seeing what Corvettes and other classics show up each year to join the festivities.”
Children sat on the shoulders of parents. Some stood and jockeyed for a good view, hoping to get a glimpse of their family or friends as they marched by, and for an opportunity to wave to Santa (and to gather an abundance of candy).
Spectators cheered when the dance troupes entertained, and the Massillon Downtown Chicken, making its debut in the parade, was also a favorite.
The real seasoned parade watchers bundled up and brought folding chairs and blankets. Alexis Freeman, 41, a customer service representative from Massillon, was sitting with her daughter, Mykal, 15. Although she wasn’t feeling well, Mykal was there to cheer on the Tiger Swing Band.
