Ramp closures, traffic split effective this week as part of Akron highway reconstruction

Motorists will have a few changes to adjust to starting this week as part of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s reconstruction of highways around the city’s Central Interchange.

The following ramps will be closed beginning Wednesday and Thursday evening through late fall:

At 8 p.m. Wednesday, the ramps to the Akron Innerbelt/Route 59 westbound from Rand Avenue and Rhodes Avenue will be closed. The detour will be via Vernon Odom Boulevard to Interstate 77.

The ramp from Route 59 to Interstate 76 westbound will also close Wednesday. The detour will be via Vernon Odom Boulevard to I-77.

On Thursday, the ramp from I-76 westbound to East Avenue will close. The detour will be via the Vernon Odom Boulevard exit.

Traffic split

Also starting Thursday evening through late fall, westbound traffic on I-76 West/I-77 North will be split into two lanes, with one lane crossing over onto the south/east side of the highway between between Princeton Street and the Kenmore Leg. Traffic wishing to exit at Dart Avenue or the I-76/Kenmore Leg will need to remain in the right lane.

Overnight ramp closures

On Thursday at 8 p.m. through Friday morning at 5 a.m. the following ramps will close for a traffic pattern switch:

• The ramp from Main Street to I-76 westbound — traffic will be directed to I-277 and the Kenmore Leg.

• The ramp from I-76 West to Dart Avenue/Route 59. The detour will be I-76 West to Vernon Odom Boulevard, to I-76 East, to Lakeshore Boulevard.

• The ramp from I-76 West to I-76/Kenmore Leg. The detour will be I-76 West to Vernon Odom Boulevard to I-77 South to the I-76/Kenmore Leg.
