Speediest ‘elves’ at Akron-Canton food bank’s race are from Wadsworth, Chardon; 1,000 run

About 1,000 elves participated in the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s ’80s-themed Selfless Elf 5k on Saturday in downtown Akron.

The food bank celebrated the 12th running of the race, a signature event of its annual Holiday Campaign.

Enough money was raised to help the food bank distribute food for thousands of meals.

The event encouraged both runners and walkers to dress in ’80s-themed outfits and festive holiday costumes. This year’s elf socks were neon pink and green to celebrate the theme.

Overall top female runner was Macy McRowe, 25, of Wadsworth, who has run the race for 11 years. She’s been the female in first place for 10 years.

“I choose to run this race because it’s a family tradition,” McRowe said. “I look forward to it every year and it’s such an important nonprofit to fundraise for. It means a lot to me. As a teacher, I see the direct impact the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank has on the community.”
