Fire destroys Canton home; six cats die in early-morning blaze

CANTON ‒ One person was able to escape uninjured during a fire at a home on Alden Avenue SW early Thursday.

Six cats died in the blaze, according to a news release from the Canton Fire Department.

Crews were called to 1623 Alden at 2:10 a.m. The building was in flames when firefighters arrived.

“The one female occupant that was in the building when the fire started was able to evacuate without injury prior to fire department arrival,” the release said.

Crews tried to fight the fire from inside but were forced out of the building because the building became unsafe

No injuries were reported and no surrounding homes were damaged.

The house was destroyed and will have to be razed, investigators said. The building loss was estimated at $46,100.
