Portage County authorities use 10 doses of Narcan to revive Akron man during traffic stop

An Akron man received numerous Narcan doses to survive a fentanyl overdose during a traffic stop in Brimfield Township early Sunday morning.

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook Monday that a sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle for window tint and marked lane violations on Interstate 76 westbound at about 2 a.m.

A deputy’s K-9 then indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle and the 37-year-old man, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have a warrant for his arrest through the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. After he was taken into custody, the man said he had swallowed fentanyl and then he lost consciousness, according to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s personnel and Brimfield police officers on scene by that time gave the man 10 doses of the opioid overdose antidote Narcan before the Brimfield Fire Department took him to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center.

The man subsequently made a full recovery, the sheriff’s office said.

Meanwhile, the man was found in possession of about 2.5 ounces of suspected crystal meth and a digital scale with suspected meth residue on it, the sheriff’s office said.
