‘I messed up’ man says at sentencing for doctor’s death

CLEVELAND (WJW) — A man who pleaded guilty to a deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 90 was sentenced Wednesday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

Jalen Jackson admitted to a string of charges, including involuntary manslaughter, after authorities said he stole an Amazon delivery van at gunpoint in December 2023, fled police at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour, and crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing the driver.

The victim, 70-year-old Dr. Curtis Birchall of Akron, was a respected emergency room physician who also ran an anti-aging clinic in Rocky River. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
