Officers return fire, take cover in shooting near University of Akron

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — Two Akron police officers will be placed on paid leave, per departmental procedure, following an officer-involved shooting that took place late Sunday night near the University of Akron.

According to a press release, at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, officers were called tocheck on a teenager in the 400 block of Grant Street. While on the scene, officers heard gunshots nearby and moments later responded to 440 Sherman Street, located about one block away.

As officers were approaching, they encountered a male armed with a firearm running out of an apartment. According to the press release, the suspect began shooting, causing the officers to return fire as they took cover.

Former OSU football player hurt in ATV accident

The 33-year-old suspect fled the scene on foot but was apprehended a few blocks away, without incident. According to officials, neither the suspect nor the officers involved were injured.

However, upon further investigation, a 27-year-old female inside one of the apartments was found with a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. She was transported to a local hospital by EMS with a non-life-threatening injury…
