AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — Newly released body-camera video of an officer-involved shooting near the University of Akron shows the moment police said a suspect began shooting, causing the officers to return fire as they took cover.
The shootout took place at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, in the 400 block of Sherman Street. Police said they were initially called to check on the welfare of a teenager in the nearby 400 block of Grant Street, but while on the scene, they heard gunshots nearby and moments later responded.

As officers were approaching the scene, officials said, they encountered a man who was armed with a gun and running out of an apartment. According to a previous press release, a suspect began shooting, causing the officers to return fire.
In the video, several rounds of gunfire can be heard, and an officer yelling, “get down.” Followed by “21 shots fired.” The shootout lasted just about 12 seconds.
