Summit County Hazmat Team conducts mock train derailment drill with Norfolk Southern

MACEDONIA, Ohio (WJW) – First responders in Summit County are preparing for the worst, practicing how to handle a full-scale hazardous materials incident.

On Wednesday, the Summit County Hazmat Team, the city of Macedonia and Norfolk Southern coordinated an emergency hazmat training exercise at the Conrail yard on Ledge Road.

“Rail emergencies are very infrequent, but they tend to be large-scale incidents,” Macedonia Fire Chief Brian Ripley said.

Ripley said multiple agencies, including hazmat response, took part in the exercise, which simulated a tanker spill on one train car, two others showing smoke, and a separate scenario involving a trapped victim inside one of the cars, allowing the tactical rescue team to conduct a live rescue drill…
