Fish that grow 100+ lbs. to be released locally

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — Wildlife experts in Ohio are preparing for a ‘historic moment‘ in the recovery of the Cuyahoga River as they plan to release 1,500 juvenile lake sturgeon into the waterway, which famously caught fire decades ago due to pollution.

Last fall, sixty of the large fish were released into the Cuyahoga River with implanted transmitters as part of a pilot project to reintroduce the endangered fish into the waterway.

At the time, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources explained that the fish, which can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh over 300 pounds, were historically very abundant in some Ohio waterways like the Ohio River and Lake Erie, however, their numbers have declined likely because more dams now prevent them from reaching spawning grounds in much smaller streams.

This latest release is set to take place at Rivergate Park on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
