‘A tragic and senseless killing’: Akron man sentenced to life in prison for 2024 murder of Darnell McGrady

AKRON, Ohio — Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich announced Wednesday that Byron Johnson, 29, has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2024 murder of 32-year-old Darnell McGrady inside his Wilbeth Road home in Akron.

Johnson will be eligible for parole after 18 years.

Previously, Johnson pleaded guilty to:

  • One count of murder with a 3-year firearm specification
  • One count of aggravated burglary
  • One count of grand theft of a motor vehicle

“This was a tragic and senseless killing. While nothing can bring Darnell back, I hope this conviction allows his loved ones to take another step forward in the healing process. My thoughts are with them as they continue to grapple with this loss,” said Prosecutor Kolkovich.
