According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a waterspout is a “whirling column of air and water mist.”

According to FOX 8 Meteorologist Jenn Harcher, “Waterspouts are common on Lake Erie during the late summer and early fall. Known as fair-weather waterspouts, they are usually weak and short-lived. They form over the water when cooler air moves over the warmer lake surface. The big temperature difference causes the warm air to rise and rotate.”…
