Akron Children’s Hospital opens specialized heart unit in expanded pediatric ICU

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Akron Children’s Hospital has an expanded pediatric intensive care unit that offers patients and families upgraded amenities and a dedicated heart unit, the hospital recently announced.

The new pediatric intensive care unit has expanded from 23 to 45 beds, including a 13-bed high-acuity pediatric intensive care unit and nine-bed heart unit, the hospital said.

“By concentrating all heart patients in a single location, it helps us develop a highly specialized care team focused on the heart,” said Dr. Robert Stewart, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Akron Children’s. “This allows us to continue to grow as a center of excellence in caring for babies and children with congenital heart disease.”…
