Major gas leak prompts evacuations in Suffield Township

SUFFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – Residents in Portage County’s Suffield Township were evacuated from their homes Wednesday evening due to a “major” gas leak in the area.

The Suffield Fire Department took to social media around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, confirming that firefighters were on the scene of a leaking natural gas well. It wasn’t until about midnight that residents were given the clear to return home.

Residents were initially asked to avoid the area of Palm Road from Randolph to Saxe.

“It is a major leak,” the fire department wrote. “We are evacuating the area.”

In an update after 10 p.m., fire officials said the well has been isolated, stating that a “vehicle is sitting on top of the shut off valves that need to be accessed.”…
