City of Akron says drinking water quality now best in at least 5 years after elevated chemical levels earlier this summer

AKRON, Ohio — Akron city officials say water quality has returned to normal, and even improved beyond recent years, following months of work to reduce chemical levels that exceeded federal drinking water standards earlier this summer.

In an update, the City of Akron reported that the latest round of testing at all 12 water sampling locations showed Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) are now within normal range, marking what the city called the best test results in at least the last five years.

The announcement comes after the city notified about 6,600 customers in July that two sampling sites had exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) maximum contaminant level of 0.060 mg/L for HAA5 — a group of byproducts that can form when chlorine used in water treatment reacts with organic material…
