The Kent State May 4th Visitor Center said John Cleary passed away over the weekend. It was not clear what led to his death, but he was surrounded by family in his final moments, his obituary said.
Cleary was 19 years old when he was shot in the chest while trying to photograph the events of May Fourth.
A photo of him receiving aid from other students was on the cover of Life Magazine. It was taken by fellow student Howard Ruffner.
After recovering, he finished his architecture degree in 1974 and went onto a successful career in Pittsburgh.
Cleary went back for remembrance ceremonies throughout the years and donated the watch he wore when he was shot to the university library archives…
