Summit County leaders bet on Issue 2 to help curb soaring property tax rates

AKRON, Ohio — In recent years, property valuations have caused some homeowners’ property taxes to skyrocket. Many Ohio voters and lawmakers agree rising property taxes are a problem, but not everyone agrees on how to tackle it.

Summit County leaders hope they’ve found the answer with Issue 2, a proposed charter amendment that will be on the Nov. 4 ballot. The measure has the support of County Executive Ilene Shapiro, whose office explained to 3News that the amendment aims to ease property tax increases before the area’s next reappraisal in 2026.

“Property values are probably going to rise again — another 15%-20% on the next reappraisal cycle,” Brian Nelsen, Shapiro’s chief of staff, said in an interview. “We don’t feel in good conscience we can turn to voters, property owners, and say, ‘Yeah, your taxes should go up,’ because our expenses haven’t gone up to that level at this point.”…
