Communities ban together as disrupted food benefits leave more families facing hunger
GREATER AKRON — The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank kicked off its annual holiday campaign last week, and participation this year may be more crucial than ever amid the recent disruption of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the federal government shutdown.
The holiday campaign, which runs through Dec. 31, provides opportunities for community members to support local hunger-relief efforts through a variety of activities like the Merry Meals Mixer and Selfless Elf 5K.
The 13th annual Selfless Elf 5K will be Dec. 20 beginning at 6:30 a.m. at the food bank’s main campus, 350 Opportunity Parkway. Participants are encouraged to dress in holiday-themed costumes or festive running gear for this fundraiser to benefit the food bank. Register at SelflessElf.com…
