Man accused of Akron Highland Square crossfire shooting that killed 25-year-old bystander pleads not guilty

AKRON, Ohio — Deshawn Stafford and Emahni Thomas, the two men indicted in connection to the fatal shooting of Timothy Hutchinson in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood, each pleaded not guilty at their respective arraignments.

On Wednesday, Stafford, 24, appeared before Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Alison McCarty via Zoom. He pleaded not guilty to the below charges:

  • Murder with a three-year firearms specification
  • Felonious Assault with a three-year firearms specification
  • Discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises with a three-year firearms specification
  • Having weapons under disability
  • Trafficking in cocaine – major drug offender specification
  • Possession of cocaine – major drug offender specification

Stafford’s $3 million bond was continued. His pretrial hearing has been set for Feb. 4.
