Billionaire team owners want $150M in taxpayer money while refusing to pay their fair share

Cleveland’s sports teams face a financial reckoning, but it’s the taxpayers who might end up footing the bill—again, and Today in Ohio hosts blasted team owners Thursday for refusing to pay their share

News came this week that the Cavs and Guardians need at least $150 million in the near term just to keep Progressive Field and Rocket Arena in good condition—$69 million for the ballpark by 2028 and $82 million for the arena by 2029. Looking further ahead, the total climbs to a staggering $261 million through the mid-2030s.

But the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County have no money to pay those bills. Earlier this year, Cuyahoga County actually borrowed $20 million for another set of repairs, sinking taxpayers further in debt to give the teams palaces for playing their games…
