Akron mayor shares priorities for next 2 years of term

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said his administration has spent Year 2 of his first term continuing the work started in Year 1.

“I’m really proud of the work we’ve done around violence intervention and prevention, creating that gun crime intelligence center that’s really, again, building on the work that’s been done for several years now, finding state and federal partnerships and building on those — but then also bringing kind of new approaches”

As examples, he points to the ongoing review of Akron police’s use-of-force policies and the launch of the credible messengers street team pilot program. Through the pilot, people with criminal histories who have radically transformed their lives join “street teams” that use shooting reports generated by the Akron Police Department to determine potential hotspots for neighborhood violence and intervene before it occurs…
