Quiet night ahead of high winds, rain and snow

(WJW) — A High Wind Watch has been issued for Ashland, Ashtabula, Crawford, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Ottawa, Richland, Sandusky and Summit Counties from late Sunday night through Monday evening.

Saturday has been a cloudy and cold later December day. Here’s a look at today’s highs:

Temperatures will hold steady in the lower to mid-30s tonight.

A strong storm system and cold front will bring in some very active weather Sunday through Monday.

Periods of rain will impact Northeast Ohio on Sunday. The first round of rain will move through Sunday morning. Sunday will not be a complete washout. There will be breaks in the rain. The first break in the wet weather will come early Sunday afternoon. The second round of rain will move through late Sunday afternoon/early Sunday evening. The rain could be heavy at times. However, the heaviest rain looks like it is going to stay just north of Northeast Ohio.

The third, and final, round of rain will move through Sunday night as a strong cold front swings through the area. Al though it is not likely, a few rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled Sunday night. Plus, gusty winds will be possible along the leading edge of the line of rain Sunday night. The wind will pick up out of the west behind the cold front Sunday night. A HIGH WIND WATCH has been issued for several counties across Northeast Ohio. This watch will likely be upgraded to a HIGH WIND WARNING, and a WIND ADVISORY will likely be issued for the counties not under the watch. The wind will be sustained out of the west at 25 to 35 mph Sunday night through Monday. During this time, wind gusts could top 50 mph at times. Winds this strong could cause wind damage and power outages.

Sunday will still be a mild winter day, despite the clouds and rain. Temperatures will climb well into the 50s on Sunday. The high temperature will on Sunday will be recorded later in the day than usual.

The strong cold front will kick the mild winter weather out of the Northeast Ohio Sunday night. Temperatures will quickly tumble behind the cold front Sunday night into Monday morning.

Monday is going to be blustery day. Temperatures will hold steady in the mid to upper 20s, with wind chills in the single-digits and teens.

The colder air will allow the rain to transition to snow on Monday. Plus, lake effect snow showers will develop Monday afternoon/evening and continue into Tuesday. Several inches of snow will fall across the primary snowbelt during this time.

Anyone going to the final Browns home game of the year will want to take a rain pocho with them! The first round of the rain will in before the game and off/on rain showers will continue throughout the game.
