Akron delays Firestone Plant #1 demolition amid state dispute, explores preservation options for historic clock tower

AKRON, Ohio — The city of Akron says asbestos remediation is nearly complete at the site of the former Firestone Plant #1 at 1200 Firestone Blvd., but demolition of the long-vacant structure remains on hold as officials work to resolve outstanding issues with the State Historic Preservation Office.

City officials said demolition will not begin until disputes with the state preservation office are resolved and an updated agreement is reached. In a release, the city said Akron officials recently met with state leaders and is now developing several preservation and demolition alternatives that will be presented to the city’s Urban Design and Historic Preservation Committee at a special meeting scheduled for Feb. 17.

Because the committee cannot consider the options until that meeting, the city has requested an extension from the State Historic Preservation Office to respond to a formal dispute letter sent in November…
