Local schools are running low on ‘calamity days’

PARMA, OHIO- The bitter cold temperatures Tuesday morning caused more than 500 schools to close in Northeast Ohio, yet again.

That leaves some districts worried about reaching the classroom hours they’re required to meet in a school year.

Coldest stretch in 10+ years: What to expect

Many districts still use the term “calamity days,” but it’s a system based on hours. The Ohio Department of Education requires a certain number of instruction hours a year per grade level.

  • 455 hours for half day kindergarten
  • 910 hours for grads k-6
  • 1,001 hours for grades 7 through 12

If schools run out of hours, there are options. Some look into virtual learning, others remove professional development days or extend the school year.
