Fatal Canton shooting linked to child custody exchange at apartments

CANTON ‒ The shooting that killed a 20-year-old Massillon man at an apartment complex in the city’s southeast section occurred after an attempted exchange of child custody, Canton City Prosecutor Kristina M. Lockwood said.

The victim, Ta’Shaun M. Smith-Newman, was the child’s father. Murder suspect Niko M. Marshall is the boyfriend of the child’s mother, Lockwood said. She said there was a conflict between Smith-Newman and Marshall.
