Medina County Treasurer explains homestead reduction

MEDINA, Ohio – Property owners within the county can expect to receive the bill for the first half of their property taxes soon. Medina County Treasurer John Burke said the bills were sent out Jan. 30.

“We sent them out a little later than normal because we had to make some changes to our software due to some of the new state laws that were approved in late December,” Burke said. “Because of that, we are extending the due date to Feb. 27.”

Burke said one of the major changes has to do with the state’s homestead reduction. The homestead reduction allows eligible homeowners to shield a portion of their home’s market value from property taxes. He said that Medina County Commissioners voted to piggyback off the homestead reduction for one year, essentially doubling the reduction for eligible Medina County homeowners.
