CLEVELAND (WJW) — A rock salt shortage is impacting municipalities across Northeast Ohio, forcing many cities to ration supplies in an effort to make them last. The shortage is affecting road conditions and motorists on a daily basis.
Most communities get their salt from Cargill’s salt mine in The Flats, where production is constant. Still, there is no end in sight.
“Every time we have an additional snow event, the demand grows and grows and grows,” said PJ King, surface superintendent at Cargill. “A lot of people in Cleveland are familiar with Browns stadium. If you start at the field and go up to the lower bowl, we hoist enough salt to fill that entire space.”
