Why is sheriff overtime so high in Cuyahoga County? Leaders disagree on cause – and cure

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Dozens of sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers in Cuyahoga County saw their base salaries double — and in some cases triple — in 2024 by working extraordinary amounts of overtime, becoming some of the highest paid county employees.

Corrections officers typically earn in the mid-$60,000 range, while sheriff’s deputies earn roughly $90,000 a year. Yet in 2024, sheriff’s personnel dominated the list of the county’s top earners, with many getting paid well over $175,000 — more than the county executive, department directors and even the sheriff himself, once overtime and unused benefits were added in.

One sheriff’s deputy retired that year with nearly $200,000 in overtime pay, bringing his total pay to over $312,000. That total was beaten only by staff with medical degrees working in the Medical Examiner’s office, county data shows…
