“Runaway costs:” Cuyahoga deputy sheriffs make $300K as overtime spirals out of control

Cuyahoga County taxpayers might be shocked to learn that some of their highest-paid public employees aren’t doctors or executives – they’re sheriff’s deputies who have dramatically increased their earnings through overtime hours.

Reporter Kaitlin Durbin analyzed county records and found dozens of sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers have doubled or even tripled their regular salaries through what Today in Ohio podcast host Courtney Astolfi described as “crazy amounts of overtime.”

The numbers are staggering. While corrections officers typically earn in the mid-$60,000 range and deputies about $90,000 annually, overtime has pushed many well beyond $175,000 in total compensation…
