AMATS approves $29M for 21 local road, trail projects in Greater Akron

The future of transportation in Greater Akron is getting a $29 million tune-up.

The Policy Committee of the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS) kicked off 2026 with a major investment, unanimously approving a slate of 21 projects designed to reshape the region’s highways, neighborhood streets and pedestrian trails over the next several years.

Serving as the federal planning agency for Summit and Portage counties, as well as parts of Wayne County, AMATS whittled down a list of 71 applications to select the winning projects. The funding, which will be rolled out through 2032, targets everything from high-traffic corridor safety to Akron’s Rubber City Heritage Trail.
