Rare move reveals secret testimony of key witness in FirstEnergy bribery trial

AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County judge on Tuesday ordered transcripts of the grand jury testimony of a key witness to be given to defense attorneys in the bribery trial of two FirstEnergy executives.

The unusual move came at the request of prosecutors, who said they needed the transcripts to help the witness, former chief ethics officer Ebony Yeboah-Amankwah, “refresh” her memory on testimony she gave to the grand jury.

The grand jury ultimately decided to indict former FirstEnergy CEO Chuck Jones, top lobbyist Michael Dowling and former Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Chairman Sam Randazzo on accusations that Jones and Dowling bribed Randazzo for favorable rulings at the powerful state utility regulatory body…
