The Portage County Sheriff’s Office has issued a scam alert after hearing reports about fake arrest warrants demanding payments.
The alert says current and former Portage County residents have reported they’ve recently received fake arrest warrants via email that purportedly come from “United States District Court.” In a post on the Portage County sheriff’s Facebook page, officials emails demand payment for failure to appear and contempt of court.
The emails purportedly involve individuals claiming to be from the U.S. Department of Justice, United States District Court, and members of the sheriff’s office.
The documents might appear to look official, and might include the names of actual judges, Portage County sheriff’s deputies and courthouse addresses. The emails will tell the recipient to send money to clear the warrants or they will face 12 to 36 months in jail…
