Copper thieves claim to be ghost hunters, caught with cutting tools after break-in at East Ohio Regional Hospital

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) — Two men are in the Belmont County Jail after they were caught leaving the long-closed East Ohio Regional Hospital complex.

Martins Ferry police arrested 49-year-old Caleb Schutt of Richfield, Ohio, and 37-year-old Alexander Smyczek of Elyria, Ohio, as they stepped outside the facility.

Both a citizen and the facility’s security manager called police to report the break-in by apparent copper thieves.

The men claimed they had seen the hospital featured on a ghost-hunting show…
