Teachers union reacts to latest Akron schools budget cuts

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — While the Akron Public Schools Board of Education continues to determine how it will erase $11 million from its budget next year, the latest proposal would, at the very least, provide teachers whose jobs are being cut the opportunity to transfer to other open positions in the district.

For Akron Education Association President Pat Shipe, that is better than the alternative, but still a sad footnote about the state of education funding across the state of Ohio.

“We are still losing jobs. Even if they have a place to land, even if they are still working at Akron Public Schools, overall, we are losing jobs and for a number of reasons,” Shipe told FOX 8 News on Tuesday.

“They are not as painful as far as people losing their livelihoods — because we are hoping there are enough vacancies — but they are still cuts. They are still a reduction of educators. Akron doesn’t seem to think so, but there will still be increased class sizes across the state,” said Shipe…
