Amish mother ordered to behavioral health center after drowning death of 4-year-old son

TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) – The Amish woman accused of drowning her 4-year-old son at Atwood lake in Tuscarawas County will eventually be confined to a behavioral healthcare center in Massillon, a judge ruled on Friday.

The ruling comes after a judge concluded earlier this month that Ruth Miller, 40, of Millersburg, was not guilty by reason of insanity.

Miller was facing several charges, including aggravated murder and endangering children charges. Last August, witnesses said they saw Miller drive a golf cart into Atwood Lake with her three teenagers. The three teens were able to walk out of the water but authorities said Miller then told them she threw her 4-year-old in the lake to “Give him to God.”

Miller’s husband also drowned in the lake.

Friday morning, multiple experts testified to the court about her mental state. One testified he believed Miller suffered from bi-polar disorder. Another told the court, “the overwhelming evidence from the records as well as my observation is she does have a mental illness.”…
