Akron’s One of a Kind pet rescue takes in beagles who’ve never felt grass or known human affection

They didn’t know how to drink from a bowl. They’d never felt grass under their paws. A car ride was terrifying. Human touch was foreign.

These are the beagles of a Wisconsin biomedical research lab from which animal activists recently purchased 1,500 dogs to spare them from further experimentation. It’s a story that made national headlines. And now, an Akron rescue organization is part of the effort to give some of these dogs a real life for the very first time.

On Monday’s episode of Today in Ohio, host Lisa Garvin said One of a Kind Pet Rescue in Akron has taken in 15 of those 1,500 beagles, accepting them at the request of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, which worked with the Center for Humane Economy to purchase the dogs outright from the facility…
