Averill Park softball advances to Class A state final

BINGHAMTON — The Averill Park softball team is in the Class A state championship game, exactly where first-year head coach Maria Roberts thought the Golden Knights would be when the season began.

Audrey Coon and Victoria Sanchez hit RBI doubles and pitcher Abigail Colwill threw five dominant innings of relief to lead Averill Park to a 5-2 victory over Maine-Endwell of Section 4 in a state semifinal on Friday morning at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park.

The Section 2 champion Golden Knights (21-4) earned their way into their first state final since 2018. Aiming for its first state title since 2015, Averill Park will play Pearl River of Section 1 at 10 a.m. Saturday in Binghamton. Pearl River beat Wantagh 5-4 in the other semifinal.

“To be honest, when I first saw them play, I was like, ‘Oh, this is where we should go, if things go well for us,” Roberts said. “And, so, I just felt like I owed it to them to try to get there. I do think this is where they were envisioning themselves and they kind of committed to that as a group. So, it’s really them and I’m proud to lead them. It’s awesome.”…
