DOT reveals long-sought safety upgrades for Niskayuna’s deadly Route 7

NISKAYUNA— After five crash deaths in three years and months of study, a traffic light and a crosswalk will be installed on a deadly stretch of Route 7 — but not until next spring.

The state Department of Transportation on Tuesday shared plans to slow traffic and reduce accidents on a portion of the four-lane road that runs from St. David’s Lane to Mohegan Road. The work will include narrowing lanes, raising medians, adding a traffic light and a push-button crosswalk at Hickory Road.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The project will cost $4.2 million, with the majority of its cost funded federally and the remainder financed by the state, regional DOT spokesman Scott Cook said…
